  • In March 2011 I decided to improve not only the aesthetic look of my eyes but also improve the quality of comfort for my eyes. The upper lid skin had started to go into increasing folds and it was difficult to keep my eyelids open at night, without holding the skin tight with my finger, when reading or watching television. I visited Mr Austin McCormick Oculoplastic Surgeon, at iSIGHT Clinic in Southport. He measured my eyelids and did various tests to make sure my eyes were suitable. He explained all the risks and benefits involved in an Upper Lid Blepharoplasty procedure. One month later I was in theatre. The procedure itself did not take long with a local anaesthetic. He explained what he was doing along the way, which helped relax me and made the experience comfortable. I was given advice on how to cope with bathing my eyes and washing hair etc. There was hardly any bruising and in no time at all I was back fighting fit! I would recommend the procedure to anyone who is finding it difficult to ‘keep their eyes open’, or indeed, to look more alert.

  • After seeing patients’ results following multifocal lens implant surgery, I made a decision to have multifocal lens implants myself.  I was so frustrated at having pairs of spectacles all over the house. It’s now 10 years since my lens implants and I haven’t regretted one day.  It’s the little things, like being able to read a menu when all one’s friends are fumbling for the glasses.  Also being able to pick up a book, magazine, newspaper and more recently, my mobile phone and being able to read them without reaching for my glasses first. The surgery itself is painless and everything explained fully along the way. Of course, lens technology has moved on in the 10 years since I had my implants and multifocal lenses are now “tailor made” for each individual, specifically for their needs. Your Consultant listens to what your needs and expectations are and explains which lens he feels would be right for you. Given the same choice, I would not hesitate in having the same procedure all over again. One very satisfied recipient.

  • As a retired health professional I am very aware of how important a 'whole process' approach is in healthcare. From first consultation to final discharge I felt fully supported by both the clinical and administrative team. Any queries I had were fully answered, and I felt confident that I could contact the clinic and receive advice if needed. The dual lens implants I have received have given me a quality of vision I could not have imagined, literally life changing.

  • I had LASIK treatment at iSight clinic in April 2000. On the day of my treatment, I could not read the top line on the chart without my glasses. When I left the clinic that day, I could read the bottom line! 16 years on and I still feel the surgery was a miracle. I often see friends and colleagues struggling with glasses and contact lenses and it makes me so glad I took the plunge!

  • I would say like to say a very big "thank you" to everyone for the care and attention which I received last month.  Thank you to Eileen (nurse) for everything she did to make me feel comfortable. Thank you to Hilary (doctor) who talked everything through with me before and after the op.  Plus all the other staff who were very kind.  Finally, the owners who employ such good staff including the cleaning staff.  Not a speck of dust anywhere.  I couldn't have been treated any better even if I was the Queen of England.  I will certainly recommend you to everyone.
    Many thanks once again.

  • I was extremely short-sighted (-20 in each eye), had astigmatism and cataracts and had worn glasses and contact lenses for over 50 years. My optician recommended bilateral lens exchange and referred me to i-SIGHT clinic in Southport. After a consultation with Mr. Dubois, I was given a detailed account of all the alternative treatments with the pros and cons of each. I was not suitable for the multifocal so decided to have monofocal lenses inserted. It was important to me to have the procedure as quickly as possible owing to work commitments. Within a week of the consultation I had surgery on my right eye with the left carried out a week later. The procedure lasted about 20 minutes, there was no pain and my vision improved almost immediately. I am still amazed at the clarity of my vision and although choosing monofocal lenses means I still need glasses for reading, I am otherwise totally independent of glasses/contact lenses. My eyesight is better now than it was when wearing glasses and quality of life has improved immeasurably. It is fantastic to attend sporting events and be able to see the numbers on distant players' shirts!! My experience at i-SIGHT was a positive one throughout. The staff, both admin and medical, were friendly, supportive and reassuring and understood that having surgery, particularly on the eyes, can be scary and worrying. They were always ready to answer my questions and to put me at ease at every stage of the process. Mr. Dubois is very pleasant and easy to talk to and explains all aspects of the treatment in detail and in a way that is easy to understand. I would like to thank Mr. Dubois and his team and would wholeheartedly recommend i-SIGHT clinic to anyone considering this life-changing treatment.

  • Our 9 year old son, Nathan, was complaining he was seeing two of his teacher at school, so following a visit to our optician, we were to see an Orthoptist over his concerns of double vision and problems with the muscles of his eyes. The waiting list to be seen on the NHS was up 4 months and we did not want to wait that long, as he was in an important year at school with SATs coming up. We were recommended iSIGHT Clinic by the optician as an alternative to be seen privately. Our query was dealt with very quickly, an appointment to be seen within 10 days. Upon arrival at the clinic, we were made very welcome, every effort was made to put my son at ease, who was understandably nervous. Jayne Court, the Orthoptist, spent 1 hour with us, performing various tests explaining what she was doing and why throughout the consultation. She had a very calm, caring manner which instantly reassured us all, and most of all Nathan. Further to the tests, unfortunately Nathan had to be referred on to another hospital for specialist surgery. However, Jayne liaised with her colleagues at Aintree & Fazackerly Hospital, to ensure a smooth transfer and again we received another within 2 weeks and date for surgery a week later. I would not hesitate in recommending iSIGHT to any friends or relatives, we received excellent service. The short appointment times, allowed us to have a diagnosis and surgery complete all within 6 weeks. It was money well spent.

Patient Story - The Other Side of LASIK
My Day as a Patient by Eileen Jones, Clinical nurse specialist, iSIGHT Clinic.

As one of the ophthalmic nurses at iSIGHT, I was involved in assessment of patients for Lasik refractive surgery prior to seeing the surgeon.

“Clients often asked me ‘How soon will I be able to see?’, ‘Will I feel anything?’, ‘What if I blink?’.

I answered their questions truthfully and discussed their anxieties. The surgeon discussed risk and complications in depth with each patient at their consultation.

I found that once a patient had decided to have the procedure they did not question the risks and complications they just wanted to have the procedure done and get rid of their glasses.>

I was aware of the excellent results of Lasik and was impressed. Patients were delighted with the results and one lady was so delighted she could see, she cried when she came for a follow up appointment.”

I was no longer the nurse assessing our patients…I was the patient. I had worn glasses since I was 17 years old and later contact lenses. I always found this to be inconvenient. I was aware of the good results we were achieving and thought I may consider having Lasik myself if suitable.

I continued to assess patients for Lasik and I monitored the results. A year later, aware of the risk and complication of Lasik I decided to have Lasik myself if I was suitable.

I made an appointment for assessment and to see the surgeon and did what we tell our patients to do - leave your contact lenses out a few weeks before assessment, so I found my glasses and the journey began.

I had my assessment and was suitable for the procedure. Surprisingly I too although fully aware did not consider the risk and complications. I accepted them as did other clients. I just wanted the procedure done.

Yes, I was nervous, I was aware of the procedure. The thought of anyone touching my eyes was unthinkable, but I wanted the procedure. I continued to work until the big day. I had assessed the patients who were on the same list as me. It was interesting knowing I had gone through the process with answering their questions.

Eventually the day arrived. I worked in the morning and at 2pm it was my turn to be admitted. I had my vision checked and blood pressure recorded. I was given a sedative and had eye drops instilled. An hour later I was taken to theatre. Like any other person I wondered at this point if I was doing the right thing...

I lay on the bed and the procedure began. My eye lids taped back and I had a lid speculum to keep my eyes open. I found this stung a little to begin with but only for a few seconds. I had heard that when the flap was lifted everything goes black. I had not heard this happening to anyone at the clinic but however, the thought was there and hoped I would not panic if it did happen.

I waited, all I could see was a light. I relaxed and in no time the first eye was done. My eye was stinging a little, but soon settled. I was taken to the lovely waiting room for refreshments. It was nice to be waited on at work!  An hour later I had my eye checked, it was fine and my vision had improved but was still blurred. I was taken back to theatre and had my other eye done. This time I had no concerns and was relaxed throughout the procedure. I went back to waiting room, more refreshments. An hour later my eyes were checked, everything was fine. I was discharged home with eye drops.

I was delighted. By 9pm in the evening I could see and almost read the small print in the newspaper.

The following morning I returned to the clinic for a check. My vision was brilliant... both distance and reading. I could not believe I could see without glasses!

Later that day I was able to drive, I could see road signs in the distance without struggling. I returned to work and continued to assess clients for Lasik and answer their questions.

On my follow up appointments again I was a patient and like the others, we discussed our experience and outcome. The whole experience was an adventure for me and it made me more aware of the fears that patients experience when deciding to have the procedure.

I had my procedure in 2001, and fifteen years later I am still spectacle free for distance and reading. Reading being a bonus for me after so long. I have never regretted my decision to have Lasik, it was one of the most life changing decisions I have made.

I have experienced both sides of Lasik. I remain involved in the pre-assessment Refractive Laser clinic. Fifteen years later assessment and techniques have progressed but outcomes remain excellent.”
